The Winter 2012 Updates

As the seasons change, so does our recreational programming schedule here at The Door. With autumn in full swing and winter around the corner, we have decided to switch things up a bit and move Movie Night to Mondays and Arts Night to Tuesdays.  Wednesday remains Tournament Night however we’ve added Wii to the roster.  Finally, Thursdays we will be continuing with Guitar Lessons, yet have added the ever-popular, always entertaining, communal Games Night. What a perfect way to end our week!
In addition to our recreational programs, our fall/winter line up continues with exciting and stimulating social and educational programs.  Our list of workshops includes, The Door’s Teen Talk Focus Group, Cyber/Social Media Bullying, Sexuality and STIs, GLBTTQ Awareness and Let’s Talk Science.
Please stay tuned for more information to come.

Art Stinson Achievement Award

On May 10 2011, The Door acknowledged this year's Art Stinson Achievement Award Recipient Catherine Guo for her contribution to the centre in 2010. The Door/La Porte would like to thank Catherine for all her volunteer hours and hard work she dedicated to our Centre over the past year.
On behalf of all of the staff and Board Members of The Door, we wish Catherine the best of luck in the future.

Education Programs at The Door

This past year has seen many changes in our homework program at The Door Youth Centre. Our newest team member, Homework Support Worker, Lirone Davis has done a wonderful job overseeing and leading the homework program. Lirone has become a regular asset to our homework program and is capable of helping youth in a variety of different topics including math, English and science. Lirone is an invaluable member of our team and has much to do with the steady traffic that we see in our homework room on a nightly basis. Alongside Lirone is our wonderful team of adult and high school volunteers who focus their efforts in the homework program. While many of our volunteers are able to help out with a variety of different topics, we also have volunteers who specialize in science, French, English and math. As we have a variety of different volunteers The Door has taken steps to ensure that our volunteers are recognizable and stand out amongst the individuals at the centre; this includes a photo wall dedicated to our homework volunteers where the youth members can see and become familiar with their faces.
Thanks to the staff and volunteers at The Door our homework program continues to grow. Our homework team's commitment and dedication has ensured the success of our homework program and allowed us to reach even more youth across the city.

Heather Hazlett,
Program Coordinator

In my 6mth tenure with the Door's homework program I've witnessed a change in our members attitudes toward learning and enthusiasm towards entering the workforce for the first time.
I have had the privilege of sharing many memorable experiences with members and here are some examples; N, I, Ju and J to name a few. N has secured employment with the YMCA; I has improved her grade point average to 3.0 strengthening her English mark along the way. J came us expressing her difficulties studying for examinations. So we look at her assignments and also spoke with her about which part of learning was most difficult to her. Once we established that we found a study technique to help her with her studies in science and English. The results, from the collective efforts of our homework team, were impressive. Ju I saved for last because I believe this demonstrates why the program means so much to me. We create unique learning experiences for all our members. At first Ju was a timid person when it came to her studies. She lacked confidence in her academic abilities. It's been great to see her increased use of the program. Though these students credit our staff and team I believe it starts with the individuals. I believe in the program and hope to see increased participation in the future.

Summer Programs

Summer is fast approaching and the staff and volunteers at The Door could not be more excited for the warm weather and sunshine! To take as much advantage of the warmer months as possible we have added another volunteer position to our roster. Our newest volunteer will be teaching basketball skills as well as supervising basketball games and tournaments all summer long. If basketball isn't your thing there are still plenty of activities that will take place outdoors; ladderball, ring toss, jump rope and many more small and large scale games will be happening in the Dalhousie park right outside of the centre.
We also have our youth members covered for those scorching days when it's just too hot to be outdoors. As always youth can come and cool off in our air conditioned centre, play a game of pool or ping pong, or catch up with friends online. For those rainy days when you just want to curl up in a ball and nap, our ever expanding movie library and newly updated Wii game library will be sure to keep everyone entertained. There is a lot to do no matter your interest or skill level, so come on out and explore The Door!
